Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

UTONY LINEHAM, HSE's Chief Inspector of Factories, has issued a blunt warning to small firms: "Having a worker seriously injured of killed is a dreadful experience for any company. For a small firm it may even be more devastating—the business may fail as a result."

Lineham was speaking at the launch of his report for small firms 'Safety Pays: The report details one case of a garage spraying two-pack paint without proper ventilation.

Isocyanate in the paint affected the owner. He had to give up the business and sell the premises.

'Safety Pays' also details cases where consulting the HSE has saved firms money—up to £60,000 in one case. For free copies phone: London 071-221 0870, Sheffield (0742) 752539 or Merseyside 051-951 4381.

Another USE publication 'Essentials of Health and Safety at Work' has been updated and republished to cover COSHH, noise and the Electricity at Work regulations. Price is £3.50.

The HSE is running a campaign of small firm inspections. One held in early October in Newcastle, Leeds and Sheffield resulted in over 1,850 visits and netted 48 prohibition and 74 improvement notices.
