• Cecil Parkinson has announced that the Government intends to introduce an exhaust hydrocarbon test into the MoT — but not until a year after the Carbon Monoxide (CO) test is introduced, the date of which is still not decided.
Only checking CO in the MoT was criticised as too weak and open to abuse.
However, Alan Smith secretary of the Garage Equipment Association, says: "I don't think the government has got it right. It's nonsense to do this in a piecemeal fashion."
Stan Chapman of Tune Up says: "If the Government doesn't get its act together it will be overtaken by EC legislation.
