• More than 40 hauliers accused of driving abroad illegally face prosecution after a widespread tachograph and permit fraud was uncovered by police in the West Country.
Traffic examiner Ken Wright of the Western traffic area office, alerted the police after he uncovered evidence of a Wiltshire firm using false permits for Continental work.
Swindon-based PC Brian Moore, in charge of the investigation, says his initial enquiries led him to about 40 companies, from large firms to owner-operators, 30 of which were based in Wiltshire.
