• XP Express Parcels has won a multi-million pound contract to deliver medical supplies to hospitals across Europe, with a UK service coming on stream by early 1991.

XP is distributing sterile medical goods, many of which have a short shelf life, and leased equipment, for manufacturer Viggio Spectramed, part of the BOC group, from a central distribution centre in Bilthoven, Holland. XP is also taking over picking and packing operations at Bilthoven.

Belgium and Germany were the first countries to come on stream, in October, with a Netherlands service beginning this month. France and the UK will be next "but the UK is the most difficult part", says XP European marketing manager Joost van Raay.

Deliveries to the UK will come from Bilthoven via four UK airports, from where XP will pick up to deliver to hospitals all over the country. Van Raay says that once customs clearance is arranged for the goods coming into Luton, Birmingham, Prestwick and Liverpool airports, XP will be running a 24-hour service for Viggio to any UK hospital.
