Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A spread-on paste designed to protect metal, rubber and glass items as well as wiring from welding heat is being marketed by Mining and Chemical Products.

The company says that Metallit paste can restrict temperatures of up to 3,000°C to the immediate area of the weld. Using the paste is said to save time on stripping down before welding and straightening and respraying after.

Ceramic clay forms a heat barrier while the evaporation of moisture in the paste keeps the metal cool. It is safe to handle and can be applied using a spreader, says the company. After welding all but the charred portion can be scraped off and reused.

Metallit will not damage paintwork or upholstery, and is sold in 2.5kg buckets costing £35 ex VAT.
