Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

French reprisals

• In a move likely to embarrass the British Government, French Transport Minister Jacques Douffiagues has announced reprisals against countries who tax French lorries.

The retaliatory action, which will affect Swiss, Norwegian, Austrian, Yugoslavian and Turkish trucks travelling in France, follows pressure from the French equivalent of the Road Haulage Association — the Federation Nationale des Transports Routiers (FNTR), which greeted the announcement with massive applause at its congress_ The French reaction to protect its interests is in stark contrast to the British Government's recent stand. A request by the RHA to place a retaliatory tax on Swiss lorries entering the UK because of the taxes British trucks are facing in Switzerland was turned down.

The Minister also detailed lower company taxes from 1987 for transport operators, and underlined that his Government was giving transport a high priority.

FNTR President Maurice Voiron, however, aired strong fears to the Transport Minister about plans for transport liberalisation within the EEC, as the FNTR fears an influx of foreign vehicles taking its work.
