Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• UK tipper operators can now buy a highly wear-resistant plastic body lining, developed in the United States by Hoechst Plastics, which not only protects tipper bodywork, but also allows easier unloading.

The 12rrun thick ultra high molecular weight (UHMW) polymer plastic plate, is being manufactured in the UK by Stanley Smith Plastics of Isle worth, Middlesex, using Hoechst's Hostalen Gur resin.

SSP is offering the polymer sheeting, which can be rivetted onto a truck body, in either 2x1 metre or 10x4ft imperial sheets, priced at £88.88 and 2165.38 respectively.

The UHMW plastic is said to be particularly resistant to abrasive loads, and in operational trials with one vehicle in the US, after 12 months of use carrying more than 17,000 tonnes of material the plate had worn only 1.5mm.

The plastic sheeting's low friction also allows quicker unloading — often at a much shallower tipping angle than a conventional steel floor — with the result that stability, and turnaround times are improved.

Where the polymer sheeting is fitted to a tailgate, it can give some additional protection against impact damage from a sliding load.

On an eight-metre long body, the plastic material can give a weight saving of up to 433kg compared with a steel liner.
