IN REDUCING its road vehicle fleet Foster Yeoman of Sheptor Mallet is taking the unusual step of offering some vehicles for sail to company drivers who could then work for the company wher needed.
These proposals follow the announcement that Foster Yeoman has received a Section 8 grant of almost £1.9m for the provision of a rail unloading, storage and coating plant at Theale, Berkshire, additional facilities at the company's Merehead Quarry near Shepton Mallet, and for a fleet of 66 wagons.
The grant secures a large tonnage of aggregate traffic for British Rail. At Shepton Malle Foster Yeoman previousl moved everything by road Ili. will now be using road transpoi in a limited capacity. Up to 7 per cent of its loads will now b carried by rail due to the grar which was made under the Rai ways Act 1974.
This naturally means that th company have no need for large lorry fleet though it wi need vehicles for loads like ta mac which cannot be carried rail.
Foster Yeoman has alreac developed a large terminal ; Eastleigh with the aid of similar grant. The Department Transport says that this late grant will relieve the roads Somerset, Wiltshire and Ber shire of much heavy traffic ar that significant environment benefits will result.
