IT IS NOW known that Shelvoke and Drewry made 33 workers redundant on October 14 and that talks are going on with the unions in an attempt to axe more jobs. The company is not prepared to discuss possible future redundancies and will neither confirm nor deny reports that a further 66 jobs will go.
Meanwhile, Perkins Engines will be enforcing about 800 redundancies on November 7. The 7,000-strong workforce at the company's diesel plant at Peterborough last week accepted the voluntary redundancies and a new productivity deal — against their shop stewards' advice.
Light van assembly at Bedford's Luton plant has been cut to a oneday week, but Bedford TM production at Dunstable is now working on four, rather than three days.
