NISSAN Motors have begun assembly of Datsun pickup trucks in a new plant (their third in Europe), recently completed in Greece at a cost of $17m.
The introduction of light commercials — plans provide for the assembly of 600 units per month — to the range of Japanese vehicles assembled in Volos strengthens the maker's position in a market which next January will become part of the EEC economy.
Of 133,000 cars and light vans imported by Greece in 1979, almost 26 per cent were of Japanese origin with Datsun taking a share of over one-third. The Japanese bridgehead in Southeast Europe is part of an overall strategy aimed at increased penetration not only of the car sector but a breakthrough into the commercial vehicle sector.
