MY EXHORTATION to Perkins Engines not to meddle with Plymouth Brewery's real ale in their research into the use of alcohol containing water as an alternative fuel, brought an immediate response by telex from Sandy Erskine, Perkins' Press officer.
The philistine seemed to relish the idea of beer as diesel-engine fuel because it could give a whole new meaning to the phrase, "getting tanked up". Is nothing sacred?
