THE BRITISH RAIL plan for a single-track rail-only Channel Tunnel is the only practical scheme for a fixed Channel link, according to the National Union of Railwaymen.
Senior assistant general secretary R. J. Tuck told the House of Commons Transport Committee last week that the MacGregor plan (CM, October 18) for a cornbined bridge and tunnel was "in the realms of fantasy". A "modest" scheme would cost £4,600m at 1980 prices.
He told Committee chairman Tom Bradley that a bridge would pose engineering problems, and said that it could be a hazard to navigation.
