"Most people live within half an hour to an hour of their work. The public tranzport system is reliable, punctual and efficient. It operates from early morning until midnight and often in big cities there is an all-night service".
No prizes offered for guessing where that is (and I don't need to tell you where it is not!) It's the view of living in West Germany which is to be gleaned from a new publication Moving House into Europe just produced by Pickfords Removals Ltd.
I've not seen a book quite like this before: it not only deals with the obvious things like prices, schooling, business, entertainment, shopping and so on, but gives a rare glimpse of the way . our fellow Europeans live. Did you know, for instance, that renting TV is rare in France, while in Belgium they commonly rent fridges and cookers? Or that Swiss power is 380 volts, and that Italian road fund tax is based on a heavily weighted engine size formula, so that a Fiat 128 pays £15 but a Rolls £230?
Pickfords have sent it to personnel managers throughout the UK; I reckon it will create a nice touch of confidence that should bring removals work their way. It can also be obtained through Pickfords branches (free) or from some booksellers (for '75p).
