CRADE ASSOCIATIONS re now considering some [raft regulations amending harts of the Public Service Tehicles (Conditions of FitLess. Equipment and Use) tegulations 1972. The draft egulations were circulated o interested parties this reek by the Department of he Environment which is xpecting comments on hem by November 30. The evised Regulations, which nake some new provisions s well as correcting some rrors in the original legislaion, are expected to be law by the end of the year.
Part of the draft regulation deals with door interlock devices and prohibits any interference in the operation of door emergency controls by the clutch pedal or any other vehicle control. Rules on the operation of such devices when the vehicle is moving have been relaxed to allow the doors to open and be opened when the vehicle speed is less than 4.8km/ h (3mph). A further revision exempts vehicles put into service before August 1, 1973, from the need to have door interlocks.
• A part of the original Regulation preventing controls other than for onoff or volume of radio and public address equipment being accessible from the driver's seat is extended to include cassette, cartridge and disc playing equipment. Storage space for cartridges, cassettes and discs should be inaccessible from the driving seat.
Among corrections to the earlier Regulations are amendments to the minimum width of bus gangways, type of fire extinguishers, siting of fuel tanks and the number and position of entrances and exits. The height of entrance steps could be affected by the exclusion of a clause from the old Regulations preventing any part of a psv being less than 25 mm (10 in) from the ground.
