MORE than 100 Calor Gas area managers, depot managers and engineers attended a two-day conference at Langley, Bucks, organized by the Transport Division of Calor The speakers included representatives from British Leyland, ERF, Cummins and Universal Bulk Handling.

In his address Mr John Elwood of BP Chemicals Ltd stressed the need for fully trained drivers of vehicles carrying hazardous loads. It was up to the hauliers to train these drivers, said Mr Elwood. He warned that if industry, through the Chemical Industries Association, did not evolve codes of practice for the transport of hazardous loads then the industry would have to accept possibly unrealistic proposals through legislation. One of the need,s was to standardize the various emergency schemes already in use or proposed.
