• The extent to which petrol engines pollute the air was emphasized by Mr. C. J. Hinds, Perkins Engines group director of engineering, when he addressed members of the East Midlands division of the National Society for Clean Air at Peterborough on Tuesday.
If all Britain's petrol engines were replaced by diesels, he said, the amount of carbon monoxide discharged into the atmosphere would be reduced from 5,790,000 tons per year to only 290,000 tons.
