• A new version of the Highway Code was submitted to Parliament by the Minister of Transport on Wednesday. If approved, it will be produced in bulk and put on sale early next year.
About one-third of the text is new material. There is expanded advice about the safety of children, the wearing of light-coloured clothing at night, road markings and lane discipline procedure at roundabouts and headlamp flashing.
New advice, too, is given on safe use of crossings. That dealing with half-barrier rail crossings is in line with the recommendations of the inquiry which investigated the Mixon disaster.
