Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AN account of the special difficulties experienced at ports and.doeks, and' particularly in the major ports, with a summary of suggestions aimed at improving the situation, forms the subject of the fifth of a series of road haulage etliciency pamphlets issued jointly by 11r;tish Road Services and the Road Haulage Association as part of the industry's contribution to National Productivity Year.

The latest pamphlet has been prepared by Mr. A. J. Harrison, lecturer in economics at Jesus College, Oxford.

The pamphlet gives a number of reasons for delays at docks and lists recommendations for improvement, among them being:—

Port authorities should consider the desirability of regulating the collections of imports by road, where this is not already done, on the lines of the Man chester quay delivery bureau. • Major port authorities should consider the desirability of establishing reception depots for small export' consignments delivered by road and methods of inducing traders and hauliers to use them; traders and hauliers, for their part, should consider setting up collection.. centres in producing areas..

Port authorities should continue to employ all possible means to impress on exporters, their agents and associations the important advantages of delivering exports early in the loading period.

Road transport interests should consider most carefully whether a system of demurrage charges could be introduced.

Scottish Driver Contest ?

I N view of the mounting interest in the Lorry Driver of the Year Competition elsewhere, variousorganizations in Scotland are examining the possibility of its revival there. The last Scottish driver competition was held in 1956. The Traders Road Transport Association, Scottish Division, says there is every prospect of support from influential sources. Those interested are asked to communicate with the T.R.T.A. Scottish chairman, Mr. E. C. Eggleton, 131 Renfrew Road, Paisley, or the Scottish secretary. Mr. J. 0. Hastie, T.R.T.A., 43 York Place. Edinburgh.
