TWO Cardiff men, found guilty of conspiring to sell B licences to desperate hauliers, were sentenced to imprisonment at the Glamorgan Assizes

in Swansea last week. (See The Commercial Motor, October 25 and July 5).

William H. Jacka, 49, a former Ministry of Transport clerical officer, was gaoled for 21 months and George W. Eseott, a 50-year-old coal merchant, was gaoled for 18 months; two other Cardiff

men were involved in the .case— Vaughan Thomas, 28, a clerk, who was fined £50, and Alfred G. Matthews, 51year-old sales manager, who was aequitted.

Sentencing Jacka, Mr. Justice Glyntones told him that he had betrayed his trust as a Ministry official and spoke of the meanness of the plot, taking money from small operators, many of whom had now lost their lorries because they were unable to fulfil their hire-purchase commitments. The judge described Jacka as the brains behind the conspiracy, with Escott the backbone. The trial lasted six days.
