Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AIR OPERATED brakes. together with an independent transmission hand brake, are to be fitted to all Foclen vehicles for the home and overseas markets. The wheel brakes are camoperated, with leading and trailing shoes. No adjustment is provided within the brakes, all facing wear being catered for by a screw adjuster mounted on each brake back plate.

Foden patent helical ribbed drums are employed, whilst the camshafts are arranged to give a large shoe lift in the interests of adjustment longevity and fade resistance. A constant rate of lift for the entire facing life is imparted by the S-type cams. Operating friction is reduced by hardened rollers carried in the live ends of the brake shoes. Aluminium rivets secure the facings. which comprise two segments on each shoe.

Each front-wheel brake is 16 in. in diameter. with 4-in.-widc shoes, and provides a frictional area of 134 sq. in. per wheel. Those at the rear are also

16-1 in. in diameter, but 7 in. wide, frictional area being 217 sq. in. per wheel.

Bendix Westinghouse air pressure actuation has been incorporated, with a Tu-Flo two-cylindered air compressor, engine-driven and lubricated, All air is filtered through the main engine air cleaner.

Normally the air-pressure system operates at pressures in the range of 85-105 p.s.i., and a governor valve is fitted to the air reservoir to relieve the compressor once the correct pressure is reached. A safety valve and drain cocks are also provided on the reservoir.

The treadle-type brake pedal operates direct on the control valve, which is progressive so that braking is proportional to pedal depression. Rubberreinforced diaphragms with no sliding or lubricated surfaces are a feature of the brake cylinders.

Delay Minimized

• Attention has been paid to minimizing delay in brake application, whilst quickrelease valves are provided. A handoperated valve and connections for the usual trailer brakes can be offered.

There arc a pressure gauge and a warning light on the dashboard& to indicate whether the pressure is be the safe minimum. For operation in cold climates an alcohol evaporator can befitted as an extra to give protection against condensation.

An advantage of the transmission hand brake is that in an emergency a completely independent system is available. The internal-expanding transmission unit is 15+ in. in diameter and 5 in. wide, and in conjunction with the worth-gear reduction provides a powerful brake. However, it is,recommended fOr use only as a parking brake or in an emergency.

On twin-steer *six-wheelers a handbrake connection is also made to the second front axle, whilst on a singledrive sixor eight-wheeler there is a hand brake' hook-up to the trailing axle.
