A Minimum Standard of Street Lighting.

In its Interim Report the Departmental Committee on Street Lighting recommends a minimum standard of lighting for all traffic routes. It is considered that this should be one that will enable drivers to proceed with safety at 30 m.p.h. without headlights.

Traffic routes are defined as including all roads forming main approaches to, or which traverse, important centres of population, or pass through detached built-up areas on which there is appreciable pedest.ian traffic.

It is pointed out that the trend of design of lighting installations must have regard to the nature of roadsurfacing mateaials and dressing. .

The annual cost is estimated at from £300 to £400 pei mile. On the assumption that all classified roads in county boroughs and 20 per cent, of classified roads in counties are lighted to the appropriate standard, the cost would be about £3,500,000 per year.
