The Latest Entries. The Progress of the Organization.
riONSIDERABLE headway is now being made with
details of organization of the Steam Wagon Demongtration. No vital changes have been made in the scheme outlined in last week's issue of The Commercial Motor, except that the entrants have decided to act independently in their arrangements for the supplies of fuel at the nightly stopping places. Some may use coke; all will use smokeless fuel, however, and we understand that Judd Budd, Ltd., is arranging to have more than ample supplies for those who place orders with them.
We hear from William Allehin, Ltd.., that owing to unforeseen circumstances it is now unable to take part in the demonstration, but Charles Burrell and Sons, Ltd., has intimated its intention to send a wagon, and as Atkinson-Walker, Ltd., is entering a Leyland wagon as well as an Atkinson-Walker, the number of vehicles taking part will probably exceed the dozen which we hake all along expected. The list of entrants is as follows: Atkinson-Walker Wagons, Ltd., of Preston; Charles Burrell and Son, Ltd., -of Thetford; Clayton Wagons, Ltd., of Lincoln; Fodens, Ltd., of Sandbach; John Fowler and Co. (Leeds), Ltd., of Leeds; Richard Garrett and Sons, Ltd., of Leiston ; Mann's Patent St.P.8111 Cart and Wagon Co., Ltd., of Leeds ; Sentinel Waggon Works, Ltd., of Shrewsbury, and the Yorkshire Steam Wagon Co., of Leeds.
By the courtesy of the Chief Constable of Liverpool the wagons will parade on the south Side of St. Georges Hall preparatory to the start from that city at 10 o'clock on the morning of Wednesday, November 9th. They will only be there for half an hour from 9.30 a.m., and many important people have expressed their intention to be present to bid them god-speed. As 'Friday, November 11th, is Armistice Day, the vehicles will be timed to line up at Wakefield at 10.45 a.m., so that the two-minutes' silence may be strictly observed at 11 o'clock. We are glad to learn that the Mining Association of Great Britain has decided to make a substantial grant towards the advertising of the Demonstration in the provincial Press.
We are still in need of assistance in completing the reception ,committees at the various .stopping places. The. reception at each .place, generally speaking, will e4.2 occupy about half an hour, and besides municipal officials we are asking prominent users to allow us to include them upon the committees (upon whom, by the way, no detail work will be imposed, as that will all be carried out by the organizer and his staff). We repeat the itinerary, which gives the route, the stopping places and the times of arrival and departure.
