Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

PEREAPS the oldest concern specializing on the manufacture of ball bearings in England, the Auto kitichiskery Co., Ltd., of Coventry, has produced a special bearing which possesses some novel and useful features, and which cannot fail to be largely used where heavy journal and thrust loads have to be borne by one bearing. Owing to the fact that its willtk is no more than that of an ordinary single-row journal bearing, it is of value in cases of renewal where the load is more than an ordinary beating can sustain with reasonable safety, so, apart from its introduction into new designs, we particularly recommend those in charge of maintenance to investigate its good features..

The bearing is of that class in which the races are so arranged that the balls cau bear a journal load as well as ail end load, and has, for some time, been known as a "double purpose" bearing. but in this particular bearing there are two sets of balls, both taking the load simultaneously. Each race contains a marl larger number of balls than is usual with bearings unless filling slots

are employed, the "dual" bearing having no fitting slots. The cage is in one piece, so that there are no rivets to come loose.

The design of the bearing is a departure from ordinary practice, as the balls are of slightly different sizes and their races arc in proportion, the diameter of both balls and races being determined by the lines shown in our

illustration, these resembling the lines on which a taper. roller bearing is proportioned. By this means an ¥ rolling speed of the 'balls, which overlap each other, is maintained: Tha bearing should prove. particularly useful for road wheels, clutches, and the bearings of bevel wheel mountings in a differential where 'both end and journal loads have to be dealt with.
