Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

"The main culprits are kids who have nothing better to do "Thus we describe the murderous idiots who think it's a lark to throw a brick off a motorway bridge as a truck is passing underneath. We could waste acres of space blaming their parents, the environment, or "Society".

We'll leave that to the sociologists who have nothing better to do than explain mindless violence. We're far more interested in the victims and the consequences of a truck driver being struck by a missile while travelling at 56mph on the motorway. How many more deaths do there have to be before we finally do something?

The Highways Agency doesn't have to look so far for an answer-22 miles across the Channel in fact. In France it's quite common to see bridges crossing major roads "meshed over" preventing anyone from throwing something off. The Agency should launch an anti-vandal barrier and video surveillance retrofit programme immediately on UK motorway bridges before anyone else is killed. And Wit's short of cash CM recommends taking the money from the Road Haulage Modernisation Fund. Frankly, saving innocent drivers seems more important than underwriting inefficient hauliers.

And when we catch the perpetrators they should experience for themselves what it's like to have something heavy dropped on them from a great height— the Law. And it should hit them like the proverbial

tonne of bricks. Brian Weatherley. Editor-in-Chief,
