IIII Steel hauliers could lose more business after Corus announced it is to cut over 1,100 jobs and reduce production in the UK.

In a statement released as CM went to press (Tuesday), the UK's biggest steelmaker says that it will cease production at Rotherham, where more than 800 jobs will be lost.

Its Teeside plant will no longer produce steel for Corus but will sell its output to the international market. However, if this plan fails it could also face closure. Further cuts will be made at its Llanwern and Tipton plants.

A spokeswoman for Corus says: "It is not anticipated that this will have an immediate impact on our suppliers or customers. This is a proposal that is subject to finance and will take place over the next two to three years."

Road Haulage Association northern regional director Geoff Dunning agrees that it is too early to assess its impact on haulage.
