75 years ago: I May 1928
The government was expected to reveal its plans for Charing Cross and Waterloo Bridges. Among the recommendations of the Royal Commission on Cross-river-traffic for Charing Cross was a double-decker steel bridge with five arches over the Thames, providing six railway tracks on the present level, with a 6o-foot road above and two footbridges built alongside the present bridge on its downstream side.
50 years ago: I May 1953
The North Western Gas Board said that time spent emptying retorts had been reduced by a quarter following the introduction of hand-operated tippers mounted on electric truck chassis. The firm said that each truck now emptied 28 retorts and delivered the coke to the grader 15 times in every 24 hours, taking 45 minutes as opposed to the 6o minutes formerly taken by a petrol vehicle. Iii addition to being faster in operation and cheaper to maintain, the new trucks were not affected by dust and steam.
25 years ago: 5 May 1978
The Health and Safety Commission said that its latest figures highlighted that 16 million working days a year were lost as a result of workshop accidents. In 1976 there were 326,500 notified accidents, including nearly Goo deaths.
Bill Simpson, chairman of the H SC, said: "These figures reinforce our view that health and safety at work are fundamental to the economic wellbeing of the country. Our overriding concern is to encourage the participation of those who create and work with risks to overcome them."
