One man who has experienced the problem first-hand is Colin Cornell, an HMI instructor for Crowlands Driving School in Rumford. On r November last year he was accompanying a learner driver when children hurled a slab of concrete from a footbridge, hitting the windscreen of their 32-tonne vehicle.
The driver swerved but managed to pull into a lay-by, avoiding any further damage. Fortunately no one was injured but the windscreen was cracked. By the time police had arrived, the children had disappeared, he says.
Cornell, who has been teaching for over 22 years, adds: "It was quite a shock but the learner driver reacted very well. We had passed that footbridge many times as it is on the test route, and we had seen those children on the bridge beforehand.
"I am very wary about driving around there now and always check when going under bridges to make sure no one's leaning over the side."
