• Irish Transport Minister Seamus Brennan is attempting to ban trucks and trailers exceeding 4.65m in height entering Ireland. The move is a direct consequence of height restrictions in the recently completed Dublin Port Tunnel which has an operating height of 4.65m—restricting the use of supercube trailers which have a height of up to 4.9m.

The proposed block is predicted to have a negative effect on British exports, while Marks and Spencer has already warned it would have to put more trucks on the road to deriver the same number of goods. Austin Gilligan of Gwynned Shipping in Ireland has been in talks with Dublin City Council and the National Road Association who are jointly responsible for the tunnel. He believes problems with the tunnel height—and the subsequent threat to ban high trucks from Ireland's roads—could have easily been avoided if planners had consulted haulage associations and ferry operators regarding vehicle height.

Gilligan says: The council claims to have conducted research at the port, stating that only 1.8% of vehicles that pass through are above the height restriction. But it has come to light that they did not include two terminals which are constantly used by hauliers."
