Dr D. A. Cluarmby, 28, has been appointed London Transport director of operational research—a new post. Dr Quarmby. a graduate in Mechanical Sciences and Economics, obtained his doctorate at Leeds University, becoming a lecturer. Seconded to the Ministry of Transport in 1966, he later became the head of the research and development branch of the mathematical advisory unit. In his new post he will be responsible for the operational research section.

Mr G. Collin Hepworth, md of the Associated Engineering Group and member of the Council of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, has been appointed chairman of the Society's accessory and component manufacturers' section committee.

G. E. Hutchinson has been appointed bus planning officer of Tyneside Passenger Transport Executive. Mr Hutchinson joined the Venture Transport Co (Newcastle) Ltd. of Consett, Co Durham, in 1962 as a management trainee: he later became personal assistant to the gm, L. Graham, and has been responsible for the day-to-day running of the traffic department.

P. F. Bunning has been appointed distribution manager of DanePak Ltd, Thetford, Norfolk. Previously he was transport manager of A. King and Sons Ltd. Norwich. He is vicechairman of the ITA East Anglia division.

S. Waring has been appointed md, special markets division-lof James A. Jobling and Co Ltd. Sunderland.

H. C. Kay, previously transport manager of Newalls Insulation and Chemical Co Ltd. Co Durham, becomes distribution manager of Barratt and Co Ltd. Wood Green.

Maj M. de V. Cavanagh becomes group transport manager of Purle Brothers Holdings Ltd, Rayleigh, Essex.

Leslie Howard, 48, becomes operations manager with Burn Transit Ltd—a subsidiary of Blox Services Ltd. Mr Howard was formerly with the Transport Development Group, as parcels distribution manager.

J. V. R. Dick has succeeded P. H. Quinn as transport group sales manager of Alcan Booth Industries Ltd, Banbury.

E. H. Attoe, a Norwich transport manager, is one of the 19 members of the Transport Users' Consultative Committee for East Anglia appointed by the Minister of Transport. Also joining the committee is Mir A. C. Partridge, chairman of Joint Traffic Committee of Essex local authorities.

FTA elections

J. R. Elliott, group traffic manager. Alcan Industries Ltd. has been elected president of the Freight Transport Association (see Meet John R. Elliott, p. 621. Re-elected vice-chairmen were L. A. Carey (Reckitt Colman Ltd), L. A. Castleton (Metal Box Co Ltd), and H. Whitaker (Ransome Hoffman and Pollard Ltd): newly elected vice-chairman J. Foster (Chance Bros Ltd) F. H. Layton WHS Transport Ltd) was re-elected treasurer. J. Delicate (president, TRTA 1966-68) becomes a member of the national council.

PTA re-appointments

Four members of three Passenger Transport Authorities, whose terms of office expire on May 31, have been re-appointed by the Minister of Transport to serve a further three years commencing June 1. They are as follows: Merseyside: E. C. Coules and L. Forden; Tyneside: Aid. A. Cunningham (who is chairman of the Tyneside PTA): SELNEC: B. Entwistle.

OBITUARY

We record with regret the death of John Forwood Turner. Mr Turner, 78, was the author of Timetable and Duty Schedule Compilation. He began his career with LCC tramways in 1907 rising towards the end of his 47 years' service to deputy schedules superintendent (road services) of London Transport.
