UK-Canada service

• Three major transport companies have launched a new, integrated system to give, exporters of smaller loads a completely supervised door-to-door service from anywhere in the UK to anywhere in Canada.

The service, called Europex, combines the operations of National Carriers Ltd in Britain, the transatlantic container vessel service of Manchester Liners Ltd between Manchester and Montreal, and the Canadian National Express facilities in Canada.

A small load is anything less than that needed to fill a container. Europex simplifies to an absolute minimum the work and documentation required by the shipper or forwarding agent, who need only make one telephone call, fill in one document and pay one invoice.

It is estimated that, in normal circumstances, the Europex service will provide small load collection and delivery between the UK and Canada in under a fortnight.

Manchester Liners operates a three-ship container fleet on year-round weekly services between Manchester and Montreal, all containers being stowed under-deck and CN Express, active in container development for 15 years, provides an inland distribution system in Canada and operates a fully integrated container terminal at Toronto.

The name Europex has been used by CN for some years to describe its depot-to-consignee express service.

New tail-lifts

• The Steel Barrel Scammells Group has been given exclusive British rights to make and market hydraulic tailgates designed by the Heil Corporation of the USA. First models have been on sale since April 1.

Models suitable for vehicles varying from 30cwt pick-ups to 32-ton-gross artics are to be available, with lift capacities from 1 000 to 40001b.

Conventional hydraulic tailgates to be marketed as the SBS-Anthony Autolifts H10 1000lb lift and H20 20001b lift tailboard loaders are in production and a fold-away model to be called the Hyd-away will be manufactured to 1600. 2000 and 3000lb lift specifications.

Either square-edge or ramp-type platforms, with sloping or level ride can be supplied and all types have a non-skid, diamond pattern surface, providing a firm footing for operators and keeping loads steady.

All the units are built around one hydraulic cylinder, and the entire operation, including stowing, is hydraulically operated from a control lever. The H10 and H20 fit in place of a conventional tailgate, and the Hyd-away stows away under the truck body.

The heavy-duty high-pressure hydraulic cylinder is battery-driven and operation is smooth. Opening and lowering are done economically by gravity. The controls give one-man operation at either kerb or street side, and the platform can be stopped at any position between ground and truck bed. The main frame is constructed of high-strength steel plates and seamless tubing, and the lightweight platform has a welded, box-section design with horizontal and vertical structural members for strength.

A special feature of these models is a fail-safe valve which prevents the platform from operating when overloaded. A flow regulator brakes excessive drop speeds of heavy loads, and safety latches lock the platform at bed height or in the stowed position.

Installation can be carried out by SBS in a day on new vehicles, either at the group's Harelaw factory at Stanley. Co. Durham, or at the London, Blackburn and Carluke depots. There will also be 15 agents throughout Britain.
