Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

DRAKE drums made of a newly developed material which, it is claimed, give a life LP up to five times longer than normal drums are now being fitted by Leyland Motors Ltd. on all Titan and 36-ft, long Leopard passenger chassis. They will be extended to other Leyland models eventually.

Named Adlife, the brake drums are made of a cast iron having a different composition from that usually used for drums. This has been developed after 18 months of tests—in laboratories and on vehicles—the main object being to develop a drum material which would not be susceptible to surface cracking caused by the rapid temperature rise when the brakes are applied and the subsequent cooling.

Tests are said to have shown that the heat build-up in the skin of the drum braking surface can reach 750°C. and tests included the heating up of samples of cast iron to this temperature with a concentrated oxy-acetylene flame and after the flame was cut off the sample cooled rapidly with, a water jet.
