Mr. Ernest Marples is on a visit to the United States and Canada to study transport developments since his last visit more than four years ago. At the annual general meeting of the Scottish division of the Traders Road Transport Association Mr. R. G. Torrance was elected chairman for the ensuing year. Mr. F. A. Buist is vicechairman. Mr. Buist was also elected chairman of the Glasgow sub-area, with Mr. J. P. Grierson as vice-chairman.

At sub-area elections of the Northern area of the Road Haulage Association the following were appointed: Carlisle— Mr. R. C. Henderson, chairman; Mr. L. Bell, vice-chairman. Kendal—Mr, A. E. Nelson, chairman; Mr. G. B. Burrow, vice-chairman. Morpeth and North Northumberland—Mr. J. Elliott, chairman; Mr. D. Moody and Mr. E. Nicholson, vice-chairmen. Sunderland—Mr. R. Clifford, chairman; Mr. D. J. Dorward and Mr. W. Clark, vice-chairmen. Teesside—Mr. F. Brown, chairman; Mr. A. Harley and Mr. A. Sanderson, vicechairmen. West Cumberland—Mr. H. Pickthall snr., chairman; Mr. J. Doloughan and Mr. J. Roper, vicechairmen. Livestock Functional Group (Western section)—Mr. H. Pickthall snr., chairman; Mr R. J. Murray and Mr. A. E. Mr. Herbert Gledhill, after 14 years as hon. secretary, North Eastern automobile division centre of the Institution of Mechanical engineers, has now retired from this office. Mr. William Smith has succeeded Mr. Gledhill.

Mr. F. J. Goodhew has been appointed accountant, British Road Ferry Services Ltd. Mr. K. C. Turner was re-elected president, and chairman of the national council of the Traders Road . Transport Association at the • a.g.m. on -Tuesday. Mr. Turner had, in fact, been president for the normal maximum span of three years but in view of the many special circumstances at the present time he agreed to accept nomination for the ensuing year. Mr. S. J. Lamborn was re-elected. vice-president and a national vice-chairman and Mr. S. S. Robson and Mr. J. Delicate were re-elected vicechairmen. Mr. H. M. Floyd was elected a vice-chairman and Mr. J. W. Bannard was re-elected national honorary treasurer.

At the annual general meeting of the Institute of Body Engineers last week. Mr. A. Cox was elected president in succession to Mr. W. J. Belgrave. Mr. K. A. Osborne and Mr. J. Harrison were elected vice-presidents.

Vice-Admiral Sir Frank Mason has been elected president of The Institution of Mechanical Engineers in succession to Mr. R. C. Bond. He is the 79th holder of this office established 117 years ago. Admiral Mason retired as Engineer-inChief of the Fleet in 1957. He is a member of the governing body of the National Council for Technological Awards and chairman of the steering committee of the National Engineering Laboratory. A member of the Council of the Institution from 1953-57 and again from 1960, Admiral Mason became a vice-president in 1962.

The Middlesbrough transport committee has recommended to the Town Council that it should advertise for a general manager to replace Mr. Frank Lythgoe, who, as previously announced. is to retire :next October. The salary range is £3,360 rising to £3,720. Mr_ Lythgoe is the Corporation's longestserving departmental chief, being appointed transport manager in 1934.

Sir Edward Beharrell, chairman of the Dunlop Rubber Co. Ltd., has given up his executive duties with the company. At the board's request he will continue to hold the post of chairman. This decision will mean that Mr. A. R. M. Geddes, managing director, will now be Dunlop's chief executive. Sir Edward. who is 64, joined Dunlop in 1928; he was made managing director in 1945 and became chairman seven years ago.
