SPEAKING at the annual dinner of the Southend sub-area of the Road Haulage Association, Mr. C. Robinson, Eastern area chairman, said that although the General Election was to take place in October, and not June as many had expected, road hauliers should not relax their vigilance or suppose that there will be any respite in the attacks made on the road transport industry.
It sometimes seemed as if one could hardly open a newspaper without finding an article or news item which suggested that the road operator was in some mysterious way having a joyride at the expense of the taxpayer, he said.
"Common sense tells us that the reverse is the case", continued Mr. Robinson, "whereas, in fact, the road user as a payer of special taxes gets much the worst of the bargain when one compares what he pays with what is actually spent on the roads."
