Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ANEW tanker semi-trailer just supplied by Rippon Bros., Speke, Liverpool, 24, to A. S. Jones and Co. Ltd. to stainless-steel speed up t is designed two-way deli veries. The ainless-steel tank is of 4,800-gal. total capacity, being built in three sections. The centre section is -circular—with a capacity of 2,800 gal.— and suitable for pressure discharge up to 30 p.s.i., and symmetrically disposed on each side are two elliptically-shaped compartments, each of 1,000-gal. capacity. The complete tank is enclosed in a 2-in, layer of polyurethane insulation and

clad externally with aluminium sheet.

Steam heater ducts are fitted under the tank and when a load is being carried in the central, 2,800-gal. section, the two outer compartments can be used for steam heating over about 70 per cent of the inner tank shell. The speeding up of deliveries is possible by sending out a load in the central compartment and. after delivering this load, a return load can be picked up in the outer compartments, without wasting time cleaning out. This semi-trailer is designed specifically for transporting two different liquids. The inner compartment is filled at 85 to 90°C. and delivered to the customer; a return load is then collected in the outer compartments and, after discharging this load, the inner compartment is again loaded with hot liquid for another trip. With a conventional tanker it would be necessary to use two tankers to perform this work or, if one tanker, to clean out after each load or to run one way empty. The tank was constructed for Rippon by Universal Boilers and Engineering Co. Ltd. of Burscougb. To assist in discharging the load, the tank can be tipped to a slope of 1 in 13 on the hydraulic support legs. The bogie is on 10.00-20 tyres and fitted with two-line air-pressure brakes. Fittings comprise two quick-fill manhole caps to the outer compartments and an 18-in, manhole to the central tank. Two 3-in, rear outlets, a front ladder and full-length walkway are provided. A special requirement was that the overall height should not exceed 9 ft. 11 in. as it was necessary to pass under a low bridge. The Atkinson tractive unit shown in the photograph with the tanker is a T 946 XA model equipped with a Gardner 6LX engine. Semi-trailers to a similar design will be known as QTR models (for "quick turn round "). The design is the subject of patent applications and several com a bin bin

tions of compartment sizes can be offered, up to 5,000-gal. total capacity.
