TN reply to Sir Joseph Lamb, who 'asked the Minister whether, with a view to lessening highway costs, he would take steps, to reduce the licence duty at present payable on mechanieally propelled plant used for road work, Capt. Hudson stated that the Chancellor of the Exchequer had agreed to the inclusion in the forthcoming Finance Bill of a provision for the exemption from motor licence duty of vehicles constructed solely for the conveyance of plant used for no other purpose than the construction or repair of reads.

THE ROAD FUND TRANSFERENCE.

AFTER a three-hour debate, the Budget resolution transferring 5,250,000 to the Exchequer from the Road Fund was agreed to by 236 votes to 123.

The resolution also provided that

" There shall be paid into the Road Fund from time, to tune out of moneys provided by Parliament such sums as the Minister, of Transport may, with the consent, of the Treavnry, • mine to be required for the purpose of making advances to or' in cobiunction with highwai uuthbrities and ior other purposes of that Fund; and that such expenses and other' stuns payable out ofthe Road Fund as may be specified shall, instead of being so payable, be paid out of moneys provided by Parliament."

GOVERNMENT CO-OPERATION WITH ROAD MAKERS.

ASKED whether the Road Research Laboratory co-operated in any way with the producers of road-making materials, Captain Hudson said that the fullest measure of co-operation obtained between the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and the Ministry of Transport, which continued to be responsible for experimental work upon roads under normal traffic conditions, and that further contact with the producers of road materials was thereby maintained.
