tramways is changing the fortunes of Bournemouth Corporation's transport department. During the previous two years the undertaking showed a loss, but in the year ended March 31 last, a net profit of over £10,000 was recorded.

The council decided to carry out a three-year programme of tramways replacement, but the change-over was speeded' up to such an extent that trolleybuses completely superseded tramcars within a year and nine months. The corporation now runs 103 Sunbeam-B,T.H. six-wheeled trolleybuses, which is claimed to be the largest fleet of one make operated by any municipality in this country.

During the past municipal year, the number of passengers carried on the trolleybus routes was 19,111,838, the receipts totalling £113,079. This c64 striking result was achieved despfte the duplication of services during the transitional period and the reduction of fares. Moreover, during the period under review, the change-over on certaM routes was only partial.

On one route alone, there was an increase of 597,829 passengers from June 7, 1935, to March 18, 1936, as compared with the tramways traffic of a year earlier. The receipts increased by £3,060 and the grass profit was 26,768, against a gross surplus on. the tramways of £2,799. In addition to saving £909 in running expenses on this route, 68,878 more vehicle-miles were covered by the trolleybuses.

A gross profit of £2,222 has been sho4n an another route, which had been fully operated for only three months or so.

During the past municipal year, the trolleybuses covered 1,807,983 miles.
