Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The refrigerated transport company also managed to increase its fleet mileage with fewer vehicles and trailers. David Harris reports.

FOWLER WE LCH-Coolchain sharply increased its turnover but was rewarded with only a modest rise in pre-tax profits for the year ending 31 March 2006, according Wits latest figures.

Turnover went up by more than £14m. to 197.9ni, but pre-tax profit rose by just £211,000, to £3.2m.

The company, which specialises in refrigerated transport, covered more miles with fewer vehicles in 2006 than in 2005. Fleet mileage was up from 24 million to 24.6 million miles, but this was achieved with seven fewer tractors units (242 as opposed to 249) and 32 fewer trailers (634 as opposed to 666).

Fowler Welch-Coolchain also managed to improve its average fuel consumption, from 8.24mpg in 2005 to 839mpg in 2006.

Last April, shortly after the period covered by these figures, Fowler Welch-Coolchain bought "selected assets and goodwill" of Stockport haulier RE Fielding, which was in administration (CM 4 May 2006).

Fielding specialised in ambient (non-temperature-controlled) distribution to major shops, and Fowler Welch-Coolchain expects the new business to contribute 5in per year to turnover.

The annual report says: "This acquisition, through its strategically located 15,000m2 warehouse in Stockport, Greater Manchester, not only gives Fowler Welch-Coolchain a competitive entry into this market, but will also allow the company to generate further network efficiencies by more efficient vehicle utilisation."
