read the article about the Leyland Lynx (CM 21 December 1989 3 January 1990).
Back in 1938 I bought two of these vehicles, numbers DTB 383 and DTB 384, supplied by Woodwards of Formby, near Liverpool, who were agents for Leyland at that time. The bodies were built by Woodwards and the coach was painted by them, with a blue body and red chassis.
These were the only vehicles that I had at that time. They were under 3.5 tonnes unladen and so could travel at 30mph.
I had good service from both these vehicles; they were trunking two and three loads each way between Liverpool and Edinburgh, and taking a return load to Lancashire. I have no recollection of difficulty with the gears and did not find the pedal too heavy.
Altogether, a good vehicle, with power and brakes adequate for that time. They worked on a hard road over Shap Fells and other hill paths — no motorways then.
Unfortunately, I had not run them long enough to see what they really could do.
On 1 lam Sunday morning when Mr Chamberlain was declaring war on the Germans, the army was at our yard commandeering my own two lor
ries. They were seen in France a few days later among a lot of other local lorries. I never saw or heard of them again. I have been in haulage since 1925 and at 80 years old I am now retired. I have taken Commercial Motor since 1930 and still enjoy reading it. I only wish that I was 30 years old again, and could drive one of those wonderful lorries of today.
