• Portable cabin hire company Allied Accommodation is expanding into commercial vehicle rental. A subsidiary of the Allied Partnership Group, it has set up Allied Van and Truck Rental which will operate from the firm's existing network of 14 dealers around the UK. Vehicles already purchased for the fleet include vans, minibuses and dropsided vehicles. There are plans to buy several HGVs.
Cutting back
• Bridgwater-based Bown & Son is selling 10 vehicles and has made 12 drivers redundant following the loss of a major contract with Birchwood Concrete. It will then operate with 10 vehicles.

• Engine and transmission designer Ricardo Group and SAC International, an engineering design group, have joined forces to form a venture with a combined turnover of more than £60
More waste
• Waste management company BFI Wastecare has bought the Coventrybased Potters Waste, which specialises in the collection and disposal of industrial and commercial waste.
Coal carriers • Lex Van Contracts is supplying British Coal with a fleet of 90 vehicles to use at its Mine Service Centre and Coal Research Establishment.
Owner dies
• Mason Transport is to close following the death of company boss Jeff Mason. The Shrewsbury-based firm runs about 25 vehicles. See page 94.
