Ili GARAGE mechanics and engineers should be "licensed" — that's the view of the Institute of the Motor Industry, Workshop reported in June 1988, "A skilled mechanic" has written to us asking for a follow-up from the IMI on what is happening. We contacted IM I director-general Roy Ward, who writes:
Dear Sir The Institute of the Motor Industry has developed two specific qualifications for motor vehicle technicians; the Licentiate Automotive Engineer (LAE) and the Certificated Automotive Engineer (CAE). Application has been made to National Council for Vocational Qualifications for recognition of the LAE at NVQ Level IV.
Although submission was made to NVQ for CAE to be recognised at Level III, discussions are now taking place with the NJC for the retail motor industry which could lead to a joint proposal being developed for recognition of the CAE at Level III. Should the joint discussions not prove fruitful then the Institute will submit its own proposal by the beginning of April.
It is the Institute's view that industry-wide recognition of these qualifications in addition to the Institute's more well known qualification will give the status that technicians deserve and will help in the promotion of the qualified person to the public.
