• THE National Tyre Distributos Association has produced a leaflet detailing its new recommendations for dealing with roadside breakdowns. These new guidelines have been produced to coincide with a safety campaign by the NTDA.
A West Midlands police survey in April '89 found that only 4% of fitters changing tyres on the motorway hard shoulder adhered to the NTDA's original guidelines. After a safety campaign in the area, this compliance rose to 42% in a second survey carried out in January.
Following the encouraging results of the West Midland police surveys, the NTDA is aiming to spread the safety campaign across the country arid especially to operators fitters who attend breakdowns only occasionally. While some of the recommendations apply only to the motorways (the most dangerous situation), they are good practice on all roads.
Areas covered by the leaflet include service vehicle marking and positioning, equipment to be carried, fitters' clothing and roadside procedures. A free copy of the leaflet can be obtained from the NTDA, Suite B, First Floor, Elsinore House, Buckingham Street, Aylesbury,
