Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Keywords : Reed, Business / Finance

• When we asked workshop managers in a survey published in June 1989 whether they had recently had problems recruiting skilled staff, 56% replied yes and 43% no.

In or latest survey — see pages 4 and 25 — on how managers view the Nineties, we included another question on this topic: Do you anticipate difficulty in obtaining skilled workshop staff as the next generation of trucks requires more complex maintaining and servicing? The answers were 83% yes, 17% no.

This they feel to be a huge problem, reports our survey team, since nothing concrete is being done about training in the motor trade. Perhaps their generalisation is a little hard, because we have reported on new apprentice training schemes from time to time (and note the letter from the Institute of the Motor Industry on page 33).

However, viewed in the context of the large size of the industry, the managers would seem to feel that these steps are too few and too small.

Other replies that we must take particularly on board are those — 36% — who find that equipment and services are on the market that they wish they had known about 12 months earlier.
