IERTZ plans to launch its new venture into lorry rental in the aiddle of this year, and aims to be brand leader by 1986.
Marketing manager for he new operation, Mike .1bra, told CM that Hertz is :urrently carrying out an exensive research programme nto lorry rental in the United Cingdom and Europe and is ilso looking at "other areas of tusiness related to commer:lel vehicles," but would not !laborate further at this stage. The operation will include pot-hire and contract hire of rehicles ranging from vans to :2-ton tractive units and efrigerated vehicles. Hertz is ilso looking at the trailer renal market, but Mr Libra said it s unlikely that the company vill contest this sector.
Initially, three locations ave been set aside for depots at London near Heathrow, t Birmingham and at Manhester — but the network will bviously grow.
Mr Libra said that the extra ompetition which Hertz will Ting to the other major ational rental companies — otably Avis and BRS Truck t.ental — "can only be good Dr the transport industry". tut he stressed that Hertz vould not become caught up a mad whirl of rate-cutting, .ommenting: "We are strongly opposed to rate wars."
Both Mike Libra and director of Hertz European operations, Angelo Salmasi, joined Hertz at the end of last year from rival Avis, bringing with them a wealth of truck rental experience.
