THE recent announcement by the HE of TralfspOrt of the proposed route of the motorway extension from Lancaster to Penrith in Cumberland (M6). has been welcomed by hauliers generally. and Cumberland and Westmorland operators in particular, because it will avoid the notorious 1.400-ft.• Shap Fell,. The new section of motorway will' probably not be built before 1970.

Mr. S. Robson, managing director of Robson's Border Transport of Carlisle. states that the last two months have shown how treacherous the road over Shan Fell could become, adding: " A , molorway round it is What has been needed for years and this news gives Us all hope that we are getting somewhere.—.

West Cumberland hauliers also welcome the scheme but would prefer to se a better road into industrial West Cumberland, possibly by a link with Penrith, or .improvernent of the coast road south which has long been needed. •
