THE first of a series of mechanically loaded delivery vehicles which St. Cuthbert's Co-operative Association, Edinburgh, is introducing to deliver bread, groceries and milk to shops at night or during off-peak traffic periods is a van used for night delivery of wrapped bread to Border towns; it is illustrated below, A total of 2,940 loaves is carried in 33-in. by 23-in, 20-loaf trays, seven to each container: 21 wheeled containers can be accommodated. Eventually these will be panelled and locked to permit secure delivery when shops are closed.
The Anthony tail-lift takes three containers at a time; a chassis-mounted heater of German manufacture, running on fuel oil. supplies warm air to the body to keep the bread at an even temperature; insulated bodywork is being tried in another experimental operation.
The body of the Vehicle illustrated, built by St. Cuthbert's, is mounted on an ex-W.D. Leyland Hippo chassis which has proved capable of tackling heavy going, especially the recent snow.
