THE major petroleum companies joined I in a general increase in the price of diesel fuel (derv) fast week. The increase is Id. a gallon on wholesale and retail prices.
Companies that announced the increases were Shelf-Mex and B.P., Esso, National Benzoic, Regent, Power, Petrofina, Cleveland and Mobiloil. Retail prices are now 45. 6+d. a gallon in the inner zone; 4s. 61d. in the outer; and 4s. 71d. in the general. Total also raised its price an identical amount as from Monday.
The last increase in diesel oil prices occurred in July, 1961, when a 3d. per gallon tax was imposed.
A London Transport spokesman said last week that the increase would put its costs up by £70,000 a year.
