AS a result of specializing in the servicing of eugines, including reboring, sleeving and the fitting of new pistons, the Dartford Automobile Engineering Co., Ltd., Prince's Road, Dartford, is winning an excellent reputation for the quality of its work, 80 per cent. of which is performed for the trade, which shows the confidence placed in the workmanship and materials.

Many of the jobs tackled are obtained because few concerns are sufficiently well equipped to meet the demands for work of exceptional size. For instance, one of the crankshaft grinders can take shafts up to a length of 8 ft. 6 ins., whilst cylinders with bores up to 1.5 ins. in diameter can be dealt with; the present capacity per day is 40 bores. -•

Every bore is rough ground and then fine ground, following which it is hone finished.

The company is under contract with the Sheepbridge Stokes Centrifugal Castings Co., Ltd., to do all its sleeving . work for the county of Kent, and it is county distributor for Specialloid pistons. Much of the work is done for bus companiesand co-operative societies.

One Heald machine is. specially adapted for grinding the eylintleis for straight-eight engines. A stock of 1,500 Pistons is always kept ; _this includes types for practically all makes, and they are available in Y-alloy or cast iron.

A Richards boring bar is employed for boring main bearings in position, whilst a surface grinder is utilized for removing distortion in cylinder heads, many of which are cracked through warping and then being forced down when fitting. The works are most self-contained, the company doing all its own welding, utilizing both the acetylene and electric systems.

One of the specialities is Resista liners for brake drums. These are made in 7 per cent. carbon-steel plate rolled into circles awl then welded, after which they are carefully machined to size and pressed into the drums. One of the most interesting machines In the shops is a rising-table type for operating boring bars. This greatly facilitates work on crankcases, etc., as it avoids the need for packing, thus reducing the risk of error in the form of eccentricity.

Work can be carried out at competitive prices and with a very high degree of accuracy.
