• MAN has unveiled a righthand-drive version of its most powerful tractive unit in the UK.
The 19.462FT (CM 1-7 September 1988), powered by a 338kW (453hp), 18.27-litre, vee-10 diesel, joins a select band — Iveco Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Scania and Volvo already offer over 335kw (450hp).
While a little less powerful than the Fiat-engined Turbostar, the MAN D 2840 LF/460 charge cooled unit develops more torque — 2,080Nm (1,5341bft) at just 1,200rpm.
High power and torque at low revs are a recipe for fast, economical journey times, but the model is unlikely to be much in demand with large fleet operators — MAN expects to sell about 15 units a year, mainly to owner-drivers.
The price tag of £58,000 brings the same cab specification as the 362, but with tinted glass and heated, electricallyadjustable rearview mirrors.
A prototype was on show last week at the official opening of MAN-VW's newest dealership, Crossways in Norwich, but production vehicles are not expected until the autumn.
