• Eight-lane super highways, private toll roads and the Adam Smith Institute's luxury doorto-door yuppie buses are not the best solutions to the present transport crisis, according to the Public Transport Information Unit.
In the wake of the Treasury's decision to waive rules on private investment, the PTIU urges investment in public transport on the model of the Parisian transport system, where 16% of the local authority's cash is generated from an employers' tax.
The PTIU, a consortium of metropolitan PTAs, county and district councils and transport 'trade unions, suggests there is an alternative to the emerging pattern of private ownership and infrastructure improvements paid for by higher fares. Public money is the key, it says.
