• The DTp is looking for private companies to design, build, finance and operate a new road between Birmingham and Manchester, and a relief road to the north of Birmingham.
Severn debts
• Repairs to the Severn Bridge have cost £44 million since 1984 and toll receipts totalled 58 million. The total debt on the bridge is over £85 million.
Empty running
• The latest trade figures show that UK exports are growing slightly faster than imports, but the huge trade deficit still implies empty outward trips by British international hauliers.
Loads for the roads
• Labour's Lord Underhill told the House of Lords last week that Britain moves a "staggering" 79% of its freight by road, compared with 59% in Belgium, 52% in France and 51% in Germany.
East to West
• Work has begun on a £166 million dualcarriageway link between the MI in Leicestershire and the Al in Huntingdon. The project is due to be completed by the autumn of 1992.
